Sulgrave Manor

County:
Northamptonshire
Location:
Sulgrave Manor, Manor Road, Nr Banbury, Sulgrave, OX17 2SD

Tracing the ancestral roots of the first president of the USA will bring you surprisingly to Sulgrave Manor. The historic house was one of the final residences of the Washington family before John Washington journeyed across the Atlantic to Virginia in 1656. George Washington was born in 1732, the great grandson of John Washington. The 120 year residency of the Washington’s at Sulgrave Manor is still very much apparent as Lawrence Washington’s coat of arms (featuring stars and stripes) hangs in the great hall of the manor house. The Tudor and Georgian heritage at Sulgrave provide ample opportunity to discover more about these periods as well as to explore ornate gardens surrounding the manor.
